Act lll

  •  An hour later on the moving day, there is still a lot of tension in the apartment. The stage directions also make it feel as if there is greyish lighting. Walter Lee is by himself, sitting at the table reflecting on his actions.
  • Asagai comes over to the apartment to help pack, and Beneatha is talking about how she doesn't want to be a doctor anymore because she feels that she can't help people anymore.
  • She also talks about how she has no desire to fight for independence from French and English colonizers.
  • When she says this Asagai confronts her on her lack of idealism and obsession with money from Walter Sr’s death. He then talks about how he wants to go back to Africa to bring “positive changes” When he says this Beneatha gets excited and Asaigai offers Beneatha to come with him to Africa. He says that it will feel as if she had only been one for a day. Then he leaves and lets her think about the proposition.
  • Mama comes home and says that they are not moving anymore so Walter Lee called Mr. Linder to take his offer on him buying the house.
  • Everyone else has a problem with this and says that they have too much pride to not move because of their race.
  • Walter then mimics a black servant, and mama is so embarrassed. When he leaves the room Mama says that he has died inside. Beneatha also feels the same way and doesn’t consider herself as his sister, however, Mama says you still need to love him, especially when he is in such a bad place.
  • When Mr. Linder arrives Mama makes Walter deal with him, and when he is starting to sign the papers he gets frustrated and says that he will not lose pride and that the Younger family will move into the house.
  • Ruth and Mama are so proud of Walter for his courage, and they say that he is becoming a man by doing this.
  • The moving guys fully empty out the apartment, and the scene ends with Mama looking at the the empty apartment from the living room. She starts looking at the walls and ceiling, and a great "heaving" thing comes to her attention, in which she raises her fist to her mouth. She then desperately walks out of the apartment, and comes back in to grab her plant and leaving.
