act 1 scene 2 notes
- On that Saturday morning, the whole family starts to clean up the house.
- Walter gets a call from his friend, Willy Harris, who is trying to help Walter get the liquor store started. All he needs is the insurance check that his father gave to his mother.
- Beneatha is using a spray gun to get rid of cockroaches in the house. Travis doesn't like it, so they start arguring, and Beneatha threatens Travis by pointing the spray gun towards Travis.
- Beneatha gets a call from a friend that goes to school with her. The man is African, and mama tends to feel that Africans are not religious enough for her likeness. Beneatha disagrees and gives the African man an excuse for that (politically).
- Ruth goes to the doctor, and she told her that she was two months pregnant. Ruth believes that the child will be girl, however, mama says that the family doctor is a man, so she gets the feeling of suspicion. Then Ruth starts to feel sick again, nut mama helps her relax.
- When Asagai (the African man) gets to the house, he brings African heritage gifts to Beneath as a way of thanking her. Beneatha tries on the robe and Asagai asks Beneatha why her hair is so straight. Beneatha says that she does it on purpose, and it once looked like Asagai's hair.
- Then Asagai is starting to feel some type of way because Beneatha isn't showing the same amount of affection compared to him. He confronts her, but Beneatha says that she wants to be an independent successful woman. He doesn't agree or support, so Beneatha gets sad.
- Mama comes to help patch any differences so she tells Asagai Beneatha's view on Africans, so that mad ethings better. When he left he said something to Beneatha in African called “Alaiyo.” He explains what it means, which is “One for Whom Bread—Food—Is Not Enough." That left both mama and Beneatha in charm.
- The check arrives.
- When Walter Lee comes home he starts talking about the liquor store, but when Ruth is trying to tell him that she is pregnant he will not listen, which made Ruth mad. She shut herself in a room, then when mama tells Walter about the pregnancy, she says that Ruth is thinking about an abortion. Walter doesn't believe it until Ruth comes out the room to confirm that she has already put a down payment in for the abortion.
